Kushkanatau Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Along the residual upland of Kuskhanatau, S. Aral Sea. A.I. Zhivotovskaya, V.G. Danilov, 1969 (199, pp.57-58). Stratotype - southwestern end of the Kuskhanatau elevation (346).
Synonym: Kushkanatau Suite, Кушканатауская св.
Lithology and Thickness
Lake-sea clays and marls, pinkish and greenish-gray, with pale siltstone (aleurolites) at the top, light yellow sands. Thickness up to 60m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Overlies various Paleogene rocks.
Upper contact
With erosion, it is overlain by yellow-brown feldspar-quartz sands and sandstones, forming the upper part of the Dengizkul-Neog Fm.
Regional extent
Preserved on the erosional uplands of Kushkanatau and Beltau in the Southern Aral region. It is correlated with lacustrine clay-aleurolite (clayey siltstone) deposits forming the lower part of the Dengizkul-Neog Fm, with the Uchkolsay Fm and Tuzkan Fm. G.Yu.Alferov, V.G. Danilov (166)

Contains clusters of small depressed gastropods Clessiniola sp., Micromelania sp.; ostracods - Limnocythere tenuireticulata Suzin., L. detruncata Suzin., L. quadrata Mand., Cyprinotus baturini Schn., Ilyocypris tuberculata (Br.), I. bradyi Sars., I. Gibba (Ramdohr.), Zonocypris memdranae Liv., Eucypris concinna Schn. and others.
